Nomadic Lifestyle: My Favorite Writing Spots Across 7 Continents

Nomadic Lifestyle collage

Living a nomadic lifestyle became a goal of mine about ten years ago - before being a “digital nomad” was cool. I was bitten by the travel bug when I was young - vacations abroad with my parents included visiting far-off family members and friends, and my first solo trip at age 10 to see my aunt felt like the start of my own adventures.

I spent several years dipping my toes in the water - working hard to save up money and traveling until my savings ran dry.

Ultimately, I needed a long-term way to support myself, and I realized as a content writer, I could fund my adventures by weaving words while exploring every nook and cranny this planet has to offer.

No 9-to-5 grind, no stuffy office meetings—just me, my laptop, and a world of endless possibilities. From writing in a hammock by the beach in Mexico to tapping away on a research vessel in Antarctica, my life is an eclectic mix of adventure, deadlines, and the joy of writing. A project-based job means I can efficiently juggle different time zones and travel plans without the headache of constant meetings. Let me take you through some of the highlights - my favorite writing spots across the seven continents while living my nomadic lifestyle.

North America: Living in Sayulita, Mexico

When I think of the ultimate blend of work and play, my mind immediately goes to Sayulita, Mexico. This charming surf town on the Pacific coast is where I spent glorious months diving deep into the ocean and my creative flow. Imagine waking up to the sound of crashing waves, grabbing your surfboard for a sunrise surf session, and then sitting with your laptop on a beachside terrace overlooking the turquoise water. From November to March one year, I enjoyed working while catching glimpses of humpback whales migrating. This is what the nomadic lifestyle is all about—writing with ocean views, taking breaks to dive or surf, and refueling with fresh tacos - it didn’t get better!

South America: Exploring the Mountains of Jardin, Colombia

Next on the list is Jardin, a hidden gem nestled in the Antioquian mountains of Colombia. I found myself there, captivated by its lush green hills, vibrant streets, and the sound of Spanish floating through the air - the perfect environment to settle down in for a few months. This town became my writing sanctuary as I funded my Spanish classes with content writing gigs. Each morning, I would wander to a cozy café, order a cup of rich Colombian coffee, spend the day talking with locals and Spanish teachers, and complete a few hours of work with a mountain view. It’s the perfect place for anyone embracing the nomadic lifestyle; you’re traveling and immersing yourself in a new culture. With the flexibility of my work, I could take breaks to hike to nearby waterfalls or explore local farms - it’s all about balance, right?

Oceania: Diving and Writing on the Great Barrier Reef

One of the wildest chapters of my nomadic lifestyle unfolded in Australia, where I wore two hats: content writer by day, scuba dive instructor by… well, also by day! I worked and lived on a dive boat on the Great Barrier Reef, floating above the most incredible coral gardens in the world. Inspiration comes easily when surrounded by the planet’s most stunning marine life. After diving was done for the day, I’d set up my laptop on the deck and type away while the boat gently rocked and the sunset over the endless ocean. My work hours were anything but conventional, and I loved every minute of it (except for the occasional seasickness). Life was beautifully simple—just the waves, my work, and a true sense of freedom.

Asia: Writing from the Pamir Highway

Asia holds a special place in my heart, particularly the remote and rugged beauty of the Silk Road. One of my most unforgettable writing adventures took place along the Pamir Highway, a route that winds through Tajikistan and along the border of Afghanistan. Picture this: you’re seated on a rocky outcrop overlooking an ancient caravanserai, the wind whipping through your hair, and the sun setting over snow-capped peaks. The ten-day drive took me over some of the most raw, insane nature I have ever seen - however, this remote stretch of the world was one of the most difficult to find on the internet - even these days. This challenge perfectly captured the essence of the nomadic lifestyle—moments of solitude and awe that inspire a deeper connection to the world, new peoples and cultures, and nature.

Antarctica: A Writer's Journey to the End of the World

 Peninsular Antarctica, Antarctica

Few places are as remote and enigmatic as Antarctica, and I had the rare opportunity to write from a small science-based research vessel navigating the peninsula. I found inspiration in the stark, icy landscapes and the surreal silence that fills the air here. The boat took a handful of tourists to this frozen wilderness, and between icebergs and penguin colonies, I’d find a quiet corner on the ship to write. There’s something magical about tapping away on your laptop while the ship creaks and groans, pushing through the ice of the vast White Continent. Writing from Antarctica taught me that the nomadic lifestyle isn’t just about beautiful beaches and mountain views; sometimes, it’s about finding serenity in the harshest, most unexpected places.

Africa: From the Deserts to the Wine Regions

Africa is a continent of extremes, and I’ve written from both its arid deserts and lush vineyards. In Morocco and Egypt, I embraced the Berber lifestyle by traveling by camel and camping under star-studded skies in the Sahara with the weight of my laptop in my bag. It’s a different kind of inspiration, where the desert’s silence allows you to focus intensely on your thoughts. Then, there’s South Africa, where I’ve sipped local wine in Stellenbosch for days while jotting down notes on my latest project and planning to head to an animal reserve. The diversity of Africa offers endless writing material—from the vast, empty dunes of the desert to the rich flavors of the wine regions.

Europe: Hitchhiking and Writing Through the Balkans

Europe is often considered too touristy, especially for a budget traveler, but the Balkans are different. I’ve spent months hitchhiking through this lesser-known part of Europe, living on a shoestring budget, and fully embracing the nomadic lifestyle. From the cobblestone streets of Macedonia and Kosovo to the mountains of Albania, I wrote my way across this underrated, less-explored region. The Balkans are perfect for a nomadic writer—affordable, welcoming, and filled with untold stories. While I hitchhiked, I’d often be invited into local homes for dinner, given fresh fruits or vegetables for my journey, or even asked to stay the night. Writing from this region felt like a step back to when the world was friendlier and more welcoming.

The Freedom of the Nomadic Lifestyle

Each continent has offered me a unique backdrop to create and live my best nomadic lifestyle. Every location has imprinted on my heart and my writing, from the seas of Australia to the extremes of Africa. The beauty of this lifestyle is the freedom it brings—freedom to move, explore, create, and live on your terms. It’s not always glamorous; sometimes, it’s downright challenging. But there's no other way to live for those who thrive on adventure and a constant change of scenery. Here’s to more miles, words, and the endless road ahead!
